(Slightly humorous, mostly useful, zero fluff.)

By John Eberhard

One of the most valuable things a business can have is a large newsletter list, made up of clients and people who have inquired about your products or services. So building that list is very important.

But let’s be honest: most advice about building an email list sounds like it was written by a committee of marketing gurus who have never actually built one.

They’ll tell you things like:

  • “Create remarkable content!”
  • “Leverage omnichannel synergy!”
  • “Activate your brand’s magnetic resonance!”

What do all those buzzwords even mean? Nobody knows. Not even them.

So today we’re skipping the BS, jargon, skipping the fluff, and diving straight into real, practical, no-BS strategies to grow an email list — with just enough humor to keep you awake.

  1. Create a Lead Magnet That Doesn’t Suck

Let’s start with the big one. A lead magnet is something you offer that gets people to respond to you, usually a free item. It’s a way of collecting identities of people who could be interested in what you sell but probably aren’t an immediate sales prospect.

Most lead magnets are about as exciting as a microwave manual. And trust me, nobody is giving you their email address for a “7 Tips for Productivity” PDF they’ve already seen 192 versions of.

A real lead magnet should be:

  • Specific (not “How to Market Better,” but “10 proven email templates for cold outreach”)
  • Immediately useful (not “nice to know,” but “holy crap, I needed this today”)
  • Short (the world does not need another 38-page ebook). Keep it under 2,500 words.
  • Solve a real problem (the kind people complain about)

Lead magnets that actually work include:

  • Ebooks
  • Calculators
  • Templates
  • Checklists
  • Mini-guides
  • Tools
  • Cheat sheets
  • A short video training

And if you have survey information on your target audience, name the item to specifically speak to their pain points.

Basically: if it saves someone time, money, frustration, or embarrassment, they’ll give you their email address faster than you can say “unsubscribe at any time.”

  1. Make Your Landing Page Foolproof (and Fool-Resistant)

A great landing page is like a great joke: it should be clear, simple, and not require a TED Talk to explain.

Your landing page needs all this, preferably all above the fold:

  • A bold, crystal-clear headline
  • One sentence about what the person will get
  • A preview image
  • A big, friendly, unmistakable opt-in box
  • ZERO distractions

Your landing page does not need:

  • A navigation menu
  • 800 words of copy
  • A picture of you smiling professionally with your arms crossed
  • A mission statement that starts with “At XYZ Consulting, we believe…”

People are busy. Make it fast and frictionless to sign up.

  1. Put Opt-Ins Everywhere (Without Being Annoying)

Think of opt-ins like pizza. Put them where people can see them and they’ll get used more often.

Smart places to add opt-ins:

  • Your website header
  • Your blog sidebar
  • Above the fold on your landing page
  • The middle and end of blog posts
  • Your footer
  • Your checkout or thank-you pages
  • Your social profiles
  • Your email signature
  • Inside helpful content pieces
  • On your podcast or YouTube descriptions

Bad places to put opt-ins:

  • Pop-ups that attack the visitor 0.4 seconds after loading
  • A tiny link hidden like a digital Easter egg
  • Behind a labyrinth of menu clicks

Visibility is half the battle.

  1. Promote Your Freebie Like It’s Taylor Swift’s New Album

Most businesses create one lead magnet… promote it once… and then stare at their inbox like, “Where are my subscribers?”

Real skinny: you have to promote your lead magnet regularly.

And that doesn’t mean spamming. It means:

  • Posting teasers on social media
  • Making a quick video showing what’s inside
  • Sharing a client story about how the resource helped them
  • Pinning the freebie at the top of your social profiles
  • Mentioning it in interviews, webinars, and guest posts
  • Linking it under relevant content

You need to show them your freebie like it’s the last slice of pizza at a party—clearly and repeatedly.

  1. Use Content as a Funnel (Subtle, Not Salsey)

The best way to grow an email list is to create content that naturally leads people to your opt-in.

Examples:

  • You talk about a common industry mistake → your lead magnet shows how to avoid it.
  • You tell a story about a client win → you offer the template you used.
  • You give step 1 in a short video → your lead magnet includes all ten steps.

This isn’t trickery…it’s helping people go deeper, faster.

  1. Collaboration: The Overlooked List-Building Superpower

Want subscribers who already trust you? Borrow someone else’s audience.

Great ways to do this:

  • Co-host a webinar
  • Swap newsletter mentions
  • Guest post on each other’s websites
  • Run a challenge together
  • Cross-promote each other’s lead magnets
  • Join podcast interviews
  • Appear in each other’s videos

It’s mutually beneficial, it’s fun, and best of all — people who are introduced to you through someone they trust convert like crazy.

  1. Run Small Ads (Budget: “Couch Cushion Change”)

You don’t need a massive ad budget to build a list.

Even $5 a day can grow your list if you have:

  • A good lead magnet
  • A simple landing page
  • A clear message
  • A targeted audience

Facebook and Instagram are great for B2C. LinkedIn is great for B2B (but bring a slightly bigger wallet). YouTube ads can work wonders with the right hook.

Approach ads like seasoning: enough to bring flavor, not enough to overwhelm.

  1. Use Your Existing Audience (They Know People!)

Your current subscribers are your best list-building asset.

Send an email with:

  • A helpful tip
  • A small win
  • A resource
  • A story

Then add:

“Know someone who would find this helpful? Forward it to them.”

Referral growth is the most underrated strategy in the entire marketing universe.

  1. Make Your Content Actually Worth Reading (Sorry, But It Matters)

If your social posts, blog articles, or videos are dryer than a bowl of plain rice cakes, nobody is going to think, “Wow, I wonder what their email content is like!”

But if your content is:

  • Entertaining
  • Helpful
  • Relatable
  • Insightful
  • Funny
  • Valuable

People want more. They want it delivered. They want it consistently.

And that’s where your email list comes in.

  1. The Simplest Strategy: Ask. Really. Just Ask.

Sometimes the most effective tactic is the one people forget.

Ask people if they want to join your list.

Ask in videos.
Ask in posts.
Ask on your website.
Ask at webinars.
Ask in person.

No pressure, no sleaze — just a simple invitation to get more of the good stuff.

The No-BS Bottom Line

Building an email list is not complicated. It’s not mysterious. It’s not reserved for influencers or “marketing ninjas.”

It’s a mix of:

  • A great lead magnet
  • A clean landing page
  • Consistent promotion
  • Collaboration
  • Visibility
  • And content people genuinely enjoy

Do this for long enough, and your email list will grow steadily… sometimes slowly at first, and then suddenly, like bamboo (or your laundry pile).
