If you’re a small business owner who feels that marketing doesn’t work as well as it used to, you may not be imagining things.
Marketing still works. But many of the strategies that worked extremely well 10 or 20 years ago don’t produce the same results today.
Consumers have changed. Technology has changed. Competition has increased. And perhaps most importantly, people are exposed to an enormous number of marketing messages every day. I myself get 8-12 “potential spam” phone calls per day.
It’s Harder to Get People’s Attention
Years ago, businesses had a relatively limited number of ways to reach prospective customers. Direct mail, newspapers, radio, television, email, and search engines dominated the landscape.
Today, attention is fragmented across Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, streaming services, podcasts, email, websites, and AI platforms.
Your marketing message isn’t just competing against other businesses. It’s competing against practically everything on someone’s phone.
Digital Advertising Has Become More Competitive
Google Ads used to be relatively simple. You selected keywords, wrote an ad, established a bid, and sent visitors to your website.
Today, Google Ads incorporates extensive automation, machine learning, audience signals, multiple campaign types, sophisticated conversion tracking, and increasingly complex bidding strategies.
Competition has also driven up advertising costs in many industries.
Facebook and LinkedIn advertising have experienced similar changes. Simply putting an advertisement in front of thousands of people doesn’t guarantee that anyone will respond.
Email Marketing Has Changed Too
Email marketing remains an effective marketing tool, but businesses face crowded inboxes.
Sending an email announcing, “We now offer dental implants!” probably isn’t enough to generate much response.
Successful emails increasingly need a compelling reason to pay attention. That might mean identifying a specific problem, presenting useful information, offering a free assessment, sharing original research, or demonstrating a measurable result.
In other words, the offer matters as much as the marketing vehicle.
Consumers Do More Research
Another major change is how easily customers can investigate a company.
Before contacting you, a prospective customer might visit your website, read Google reviews, check your social media accounts, watch your videos, compare competitors, and even ask ChatGPT or another AI tool about their options.
That means marketing isn’t simply about generating a click.
Businesses need to establish credibility throughout the customer’s research process. And the more expensive a product or service, the more the prospect will feel the need to do their due diligence.
What Works Now?
Successful marketing today usually requires several elements working together.
You need to reach the right audience, present a compelling offer, establish credibility, make responding easy, and follow up with people who aren’t ready to buy immediately.
Businesses also need to test. That means trying multiple approaches, and having the patience to get campaigns working well, and not baling after one month.
Instead of assuming that a particular advertisement, landing page, email, or offer will work, launch it, measure the results, and improve it based on actual data.
A campaign that isn’t generating leads doesn’t necessarily mean the advertising platform doesn’t work. The problem could be the targeting, offer, ad creative, landing page, pricing, or follow-up process.
Marketing Isn’t Dead—Mediocre Marketing Is Easier to Ignore
Marketing absolutely still works.I have clients I have been working with for years and their campaigns are consistently hitting highest evers in terms of leads coming in.
What has changed is the amount of competition for people’s attention. Businesses can no longer rely as heavily on simply “getting their name out there.”
Modern marketing has to give prospective customers a compelling reason to stop, pay attention, trust the company, and take the next step.
That’s more difficult than it used to be.
But businesses that understand this change—and continually test better messages, offers, and marketing channels—still generate excellent results.
