Google Ads is one of the most powerful marketing media in the world. I have been managing campaigns on Google Ads since 2005.

A lot has changed since Google Ads first came out. Back in 2005 I was getting leads for a real estate broker for under $1.00 each. You couldn’t do that today. Costs have gone up a lot. And the medium has gone through a lot of changes and has gotten more and more complicated every year.

So what works on Google Ads today?

Well first we have to mention that there are many different scenarios for marketing. You could be marketing a local service-based business like a health care practice or a home improvement company. You could be marketing a company who manufactures products and sells them to the broad public nationwide. Or you could have a service business that sells its services to business owners nationwide. You could be selling B to C (business to consumer) or B to B (business to business).

There are many different possible scenarios, but I just wanted you to start thinking about that.

What I Know Works

The first type of scenario that I personally know works well today for Google Ads is:

  1. Local service-based business
  2. Doing lead generation, i.e. getting people to respond via phone or email, not selling a product directly online
  3. Selling a high-ticket service (over $1,000, preferably higher)
  4. Doesn’t have too many competitors in their service area
  5. The type of service is well established and you don’t have to educate people on what it is

For example, I have one client who is a very specialized type of health care practitioner, and there are not a ton of competitors in his local area, hardly any of them advertise on Google, and they sell a service starting at around $4,000. I have been managing this practice’s Google Ads campaigns for over 12 years. Recently, I discovered some information online about what landing pages need to have on them, made some changes to this client’s account, and in the last 6 months his leads have doubled from the 100 range to the 200 range per month.

I have another client that is in the home improvement space, is well established and sells products starting around $2,000. They have other competitors on Google, but they get good leads every month.

I have another client in the home improvement space, with a good amount of competitors on Google, with services starting around $500 but other services that run into several thousand dollars. They get solid leads every month.
