Google Ads and pay per click advertising is one of the most powerful advertising platforms on the planet. With billions of daily searches and unmatched audience intent, it’s no surprise that businesses of all sizes turn to Google to generate leads and drive sales. But Google advertising isn’t right for everyone. In fact, some businesses shouldn’t run Google Ads at all, or at least not until certain conditions are met.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Google Ads is a good fit for your business, this article breaks down exactly who should and who shouldn’t invest in it.

Who Should Do Google Advertising

  1. Businesses With High Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)

Industries like legal services, dental practices, HVAC companies, accountants, and B2B services often have a high lifetime value per customer. When each client is worth $1,000, $5,000, or even more, paying $10–$50 per click can still be extremely profitable.

Google Ads shines here because even a small number of conversions can deliver an enormous ROI.

  1. Local Service-Based Businesses

Plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, painters, landscapers, roofers, and other local service providers can do exceptionally well with Google Ads. Why? Because people searching for these services have a high purchase intent.

Someone typing “emergency plumber near me” isn’t browsing. They’re ready to call now. Google Ads gets your business in front of high-intent buyers at the exact moment they need you.

  1. E-Commerce Stores With a Clear Product Fit

If your products have steady demand and competitive pricing, Google Shopping campaigns are incredibly effective. They show your product image, price, and ratings right in the search results. Perfect for impulse purchases or comparison shoppers.

Stores that do well usually have:
✔ Product-market fit
✔ Competitive pricing
✔ A clean website with strong conversion paths
✔ The ability to track revenue and ROI accurately

  1. Businesses That Need Immediate Results

SEO is a powerful long-term strategy, but it takes months to see results. Google Ads, on the other hand, can deliver traffic almost instantly.

If you’re launching a new service, promoting a limited-time offer, or need leads now, Google Ads can give you fast visibility.

  1. Companies That Can Track Conversions

If you can measure:

  • Calls
  • Form submissions
  • Sales
  • Appointments
  • Online purchases

…you can optimize your campaigns for performance.

Google Ads becomes dramatically more profitable when you track the customer journey. Businesses with strong analytics setups (Google Analytics, call tracking, CRM tracking, etc.) see the highest returns.

Who Shouldn’t Do Google Advertising

  1. Businesses With Extremely Low Profit Margins or Selling Low Ticket Items

If your product or service has a razor-thin margin, Google Ads might be too expensive.

Examples include:

  • Cheap novelty products
  • Products under $10
  • Businesses with high competition and low margins

Paying $2 per click on a $12 product is tough—especially when only a fraction of clicks convert into sales.

Unless you have a high-volume funnel with strong conversion rates, Google Ads can quickly become unprofitable.

  1. Businesses in Industries with Numerous Lead Harvesting Sites

In certain industries, there are numerous sites which, for lack of a better term, I will call “lead harvesting sites.” These are sites that will have a listing for hundreds or thousands of vendors.

Like in the home improvement space, there are sites like Angi.com, Houzz.com, and Homeadvisor.com, where home owners can seek a contractor and search among the listings and/or fill out a form asking for help. There are similar sites in the legal field, musician field, and others. And they dominate page one.

I know I mentioned home improvement earlier as a positive, but you have to look and see what comes up for your industry to see if these lead harvesting sites are dominating page one.

The problem with this is, for example in the contractor field, an individual contractor looking to advertise on Google will have to compete against these behemoths, and the clicks are going to be expensive. I know from personal experience managing such accounts that competing here is difficult.

  1. Startups With No Budget or Data

Google Ads requires a realistic budget to gather data and optimize. Running $5/day campaigns usually doesn’t produce enough clicks to learn what works.

If you aren’t prepared to invest meaningfully, typically at least $500–$1,000/month to start, your campaigns may stall before they ever improve.

Additionally, businesses with:

  • No defined target audience
  • No landing pages
  • No tracking

…will struggle to get traction.

  1. Brand-New Businesses Without a Website or Weak Website

Google can send traffic, but your website must convert that traffic.

If your site is:
✘ Slow
✘ Confusing
✘ Poorly designed
✘ Lacking trust signals
✘ Missing clear calls to action

…even the best Google campaign will fail.

Before spending money on ads, invest in a professional website or landing pages optimized for conversions.

  1. Businesses in Ultra-Competitive Industries Without a Budget to Match

Some industries, like personal injury law, insurance, and rehab facilities, have extremely high cost-per-click (CPC). It’s not uncommon to see clicks for $50, $100, or even more.

If you’re entering those markets with a tiny budget, you may burn through your spend without generating any results.

These industries can thrive on Google Ads. But only with sufficient budget, professional ad management, and strong funnels.

  1. Businesses Expecting Overnight Miracles

Google Ads does deliver quicker results than SEO, but it still requires:

  • Testing
  • A/B optimization
  • Keyword refinement
  • Negative keyword management
  • Bid strategy adjustments
  • Ad copy testing

Campaigns typically improve significantly after 30–90 days of optimization.

If you expect instant, effortless ROI, Google Ads may disappoint you.

So… Should You Run Google Ads?

Generally, you’re a good candidate for Google Ads if you:
✔ Sell a service or product that people are already searching for
✔ Have a healthy profit margin or a high ticket item
✔ Have a decent advertising budget
✔ Have a website that converts
✔ Can track leads, calls, or sales
✔ Understand that optimization takes time

You may not be ready if you:
✘ Have no budget
✘ Have low pricing or low margins
✘ Don’t know who your ideal customer is
✘ Are in a highly competitive industry without the resources to compete
✘ Don’t have a website that can convert traffic

Google Ads is incredibly powerful—but only when the right business uses it the right way.
