Link building is one of the most important aspects of search engine optimization (SEO), and has been since Google first appeared on the scene.

But a link from one website to another can be set as a “no-follow” link or a “do-follow” link. A “no-follow” link means that Google does not give any link value to the site that is linked to.

So if you’re doing link building actions for a website for SEO purposes, a no-follow link has no value and is a big waste of time. You have to get do-follow links, which give link value, “link equity” or “link juice.” Link equity is what helps your site rank higher for various keyword phrases. And a site with do-follow links that has a high domain authority, especially on a site that is related to your field or industry, is the most valuable.

Domain authority is a ranking that was developed by a company called Moz, that is widely accepted in the SEO industry and by search engines.

A Chrome browser extension called No Follow will show links that are no-follow with a red outline.

Here are some examples of sites that have all no-follow links, that you should avoid if you are engaged in link building for SEO purposes.

  1. Most business directory sites have all no-follow links.
  2. Many (not all) press release sites have all no-follow links.
  3. Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have mostly no-follow links.
  4. Most article directories have no-follow links today.

So what can you do to create do-follow links that will help in SEO? Here’s a few examples.

  1. There are some business directory sites that feature do-follow links. Here’s a list of them: https://www.digitalwebsolutions.com/resources/top-citation-sites/general/dofollow-nofollow/
  2. There are some online press release sites that have do-follow links.
  3. Find sites that have articles blogs that accept articles from others. This is called guest posting. I used to be very cynical about this, but getting a guest post on a high domain authority website, with a do-follow link back to your site, especially in a field or industry related to yours, is one of the most valuable types of links you can get.
  4. Some social sites have do-follow links. Here a list from Google AI:

Platforms with Dofollow Links:

  • YouTube: Social links in your channel’s header are dofollow.
  • Pinterest: Profile links are dofollow.
  • LinkedIn: Links in “My Publications” within your public profile are dofollow.
  • Blogger: Links from Blogger posts are dofollow.
  • Reddit: All links from Reddit are dofollow.
  • BizSugar: Links to your content are dofollow.
  • Twitter: While historically considered nofollow, recent updates have introduced dofollow links as standard for certain contexts.
