I’ve been involved in marketing for 35 years, as both a marketing director or VP for a number of companies, and as a marketing consultant for clients across the US. During that time I have seen what has worked best, and that has been to approach marketing as a professional.

Here are 10 ways to approach marketing as a professional:

  1. Track the results of your marketing campaigns so you can reinforce the successful ones and get rid of the unsuccessful ones.
  2. Keep statistics on things like the amount of promo out, number of leads in, dollar amount of sales, and traffic to your web site or sites.
  3. Have a regular marketing budget and spend the money on marketing and promotional actions. I recommend at least 14% of your company income.
  4. Survey your target public to find out what they need and want that you can deliver, and use that information in your marketing campaigns.
  5. Use a multimedia approach. In other words do not just have one medium that you use for promotion. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. And be willing to try out new media in limited amounts until they are proven.
  6. Study your competitors and what they are doing and copy what appears to be working for them. This means to copy successful actions, not copy their campaigns.
  7. Keep up on new trends and new promotional platforms. Be willing to learn new tricks (and be willing to sort through the hundreds of BS pedalers out there, so called marketing “gurus” who tell you they know everything and everything has changed). But also remember that marketing fundamentals do not change.
  8. Be honest in all your marketing communications. Don’t lie or make exaggerated claims on promises.
  9. Keep at it and don’t give up. Keep your promotional outflow at a high level consistently.
  10. Be ready to be wrong and adjust your efforts accordingly when a campaign bombs, that you thought was going to be great. Don’t stick with a failing campaign just to prop up your ego.

If you follow these 10 tips your marketing efforts will have a much better chance of success.
