A small business website should have 6-10 pages, plus a blog.
This should include:
- A home page (see my recent article on what belongs on a home page today)
- An about us page
- A services or products page, summarizing all the products or services
- An individual page for each product or service
- A blog page
- A portfolio page if appropriate
- A contact page
Contact information should be prominent and easily found on every single page of the site.
The blog page acts as a table of contents for recent blog posts. You should be writing at least 1-2 blog posts per month, up to 1-2 per week. More is better for search engine rankings.
It’s become sort of chic in the last few years to have a website that is just one page. This is NOT good in terms of ranking on search engines.
Search engines rank pages, not entire websites. Every page on a traditional site gives you a fresh opportunity to target a specific keyword theme via its own Title Tag, Meta Description, H1 header, and URL structure. On a single-page site, you only have one of each. If you try to optimize that lone page for “SEO services,” “web design,” and “PPC management,” Google gets confused about the core topic, and you will likely end up ranking for none of them.
